“ yOU’VE GOT TO START WITH THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE AND WORK BACKWARDS TO THE TECHNOLOGY. ”
Studying and working in the industry as a Product Designer was one of the most rewarding and challenging times of my life.
One of the most critical things I learned in product design is that it's crucial to focus on the functionality before the form.
Getting to sketch, prototype designs from blue styrofoam to reiterating designs, research, testing, going ‘back to the drawing board’ to amazing technologies of 3D printing… there were lots of amazing things to do and create! … but building products isn’t just about making something beautiful or aesthetically pleasing, it has to serve a purpose and solve a problem.
The reason why I steered away into the more digital side of product design, was because I found I didn’t enjoy the idea of building more physical products or product ‘waste’ into landfills / the world. We consume so much nowadays and more than ever before - eCommerce and online shopping have allowed us to have products and services right to our doorstep!
But I wanted to find an area of work more fulfilling for my life in my career…
I consciously designed products based around health, the environment, mental health, and well-being to try and solve problems for good - so I remained in the area of 'health tech’ to use my empathic nature and skills to build products that will help humans and our world.
